Shame on Goddard College

We can add Goddard College in Vermont to the list of American universities who have arranged to have convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu Jamal as a commencement speaker. I first heard about this this evening on Megyn Kelly's Fox News show. One of her guests was the widow of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner, who was gunned down by Abu Jamal, who is now serving a life sentence for murder.

Let me be clear. This is an indictment of our academic community. After so much brainwashing at Goddard by leftist professors, the graduate class at Goddard decided that they wanted Abu Jamal, a murderer, as their commencement speaker. This is testimony to the moral rot that passes for higher education in America today.

It is sad that a very large number of colleges and universities have been infiltrated by Progressives (read Marxist/Communist elements). If readers have doubts about this infiltration, all one has to do is read "Dupes" and "Communists" Paul Kengor to be fully informed of how bad the infiltration situation is in the United States.

First of all, it is nobody's darn business who Goddard College chooses as a commencement speaker. The carping critics haven't been paying tuition for the last four years, and aren't receiving diplomas. The college is not representing anyone but itself, and selection as a commencement speaker confers no powers or privileges whatsoever. Talk about "political correctness" run amok. Exactly what tribunal of Lord High Pooh-Bahs should vet college commencement speakers?

Second, Mumia Abu Jamal is an eminently appropriate commencement speaker. He is erudite, eloquent, insightful, well-informed, and compassionate. I would be happy to hear him speak anywhere.

Squid: "infiltration" is a juvenile word for you to use in this context. There is no party, no central committee, no organized department, "infiltrating" anyone into faculty positions. If anything, given the alleged preponderance of "progressives," conservatives are plotting to "infiltrate" in order to acquire renewed influence.

Siarlys,

Goddard and the students/faculty indeed have the right to invite whoever they want. We also have the right to know (if we inquire) and comment on it. That is our right. It doesn't mean Goddard has to send me a letter advising me of it, but I have the right to inquire or find the information for myself and comment.

"Second, Mumia Abu Jamal is an eminently appropriate commencement speaker. He is erudite, eloquent, insightful, well-informed, and compassionate."

Compassionate??!!! He not only shot the cop, but finished him off with a shot to the head as he lay wounded on the sidewalk. And you call this guy compassionate?? As for well-informed, what you mean is that he has plenty of time on his hands to read all the radical literature he wants that affirms his twisted view of the world. So what?

He writes well and insightfully Gary. He's read a good deal more than radical literature. I have a good idea what his writing would be full of if that is all he read.

Its not at all clear he shot anyone, nor is it at all clear under what circumstances. It is known that the cop had pulled over his brother and was being rather abusive. It is not known how violent the cop may have been, or who shot the cop, or why or in what chronology the cop shot Mumia.

You are right that you have the right to comment. But that signifies no more than the fact that everyone has an opinion. I probably disapprove of at least a third of the commencement speakers in America for one reason or another. Who cares?

Although this topic has migrated to the second page (dead-letter file??), I will add a little something to it anyway.

Siarlys reminds me of this lady I know who is afflicted with both PMS and ESP, such that at least one week out of every month, the b---h knows absolutely everything about absolutely everything.

I have yet to figure out either how this dirtbag became one of Siarlys' heros/gods or what it is that Siarlys knows (or at least thinks he knows) that, in toto, what must be literally dozens of jurors, witnesses, prosecutors, defense attorneys, paralegals, and judges, to include SCOTUS, after all this time, apparently do not know.

To cite only one example among all the evidence, two witnesses testfied at trial that Abu-Jamal admitted to the murder by stating "I shot the mother-----r" and I hope the the mother-----r dies", a confession if I ever heard one.

The judges in particular have heard it all, over and over, time and time again, and no court has yet seen fit to overturn the conviction itself for ANY reason. Should be nuff said.
