Nigel Farage Was Right

Back in March, Nigel Farage stood up in the European Parliament and told the "maniacs" in the room that the idea of a central Europe was about to be soundly rejected in 72 days by the voters. He was absolutely correct. He and his UKIP party were also big winners in the European elections last week. Above is the video. He also slaps down an Irish delegate who tries to tell him that the Europeans support the EU.

"Big winners" is a relative term. Farage and his compatriots won a larger minority share in the European parliament, not a majority. Its important that they be at the table, and that the brakes be applied on bureaucrats who think they can do what they want without consulting the governed. But the opposition did not win a mandate to govern, or to dismantle the EU. It was a protest vote, not a ringing endorsement.

I voted for Ron Paul in the Republican primary in 2012, because he was by far the best the GOP had to offer, and because there were no contests I cared about on the Democratic ballot, but I would never vote for him in a general election to actually become president.

Siarlys--you probably won't believe this, but rather than voting in the 2008 Republican primary, I actually voted for Obama in the Democratic primary. My thinking was that McCain would be the candidate anyway, no matter my vote, that the Democrat was likely to win the election, and that, correctly or otherwise, Obama had to be better than Hillary. I may or may not be accurate relative to the latter.

Also, I idealistically, and, in hindsight foolishly in regard to this particular individual, wanted to be a part, however small, of giving a then impressive black guy a chance to be the candidate and even to win if he could, which he did. I did, of course, vote Republican in both the 2008 and 2012 general elections, to no avail. Waiting for 2016.

elwood, your story is no less believable than mine. And I entirely agree about Hillary. Needless to say I did of course vote for Obama in both 2008 and 2012, and still have Obama stickers on my car. As for 2016, losing confidence in Christie. Don't know who I can vote for. Where is Eugene Debs now? (I know, he died in 1924 or so).
